A busy weekend for The Port as we finally saw the curtain raiser on all our league competitions.
The first team headed to Withernsea for the County League opener, a game we were highly anticipating following a string of positive performances over the last couple of weeks.
Port started very strong, dictating play and causing problems for the Withernsea defense, poor finishing ultimately costing us as we headed into the break at 0-0.
The second half was a bit more lively, Port forcing errors from Withernsea and winning a penalty which was slotted away by Jamie Newey.
Port made a handful of changes which lead to the second goal, a perfect cross from Kanye Revill finding Braiden Buck who dispatched his shot perfectly.
Unfortunately 2 points slipped away with The Port conceding a penalty despite a foul in the build up, which was not spotted by the ref. A great penalty giving keeper Tom Metcalf no chance.
And, in typical fashion, Port shoot themselves in the foot in the dying minute, failing to clear an attack and managing to put the ball into our own net.
A game we should of won and 2 points dropped but a positive start to life in the county league.
The reserves were away to Adwick in the Doncaster Saturday League. A game we knew would be difficult, Adwick finishing 2nd in the league above last season and somehow finding themselves in the lower division this season.
Port battled well, but ultimately the quality from Adwick came through, Port mistakes gifting some goals but the lads battling on to find 3 goals themselves through Josh Russell, Khai Wilmot and Blake Dunning.
The 3rds were finally up and running in the Hull Sunday League, going head to head with a very strong opposition in Leven. The gulf in class soon became evident, around 6 minutes in the goals began flooding in with Port having no answer at all for the onslaught. A very sobering 19-0 defeat on the opening day shows we have work to do with the players in that league, but they didn't give up for 90 minutes and played through to the final whistle.
On reflection it is a poor weekend for Port Goole, with a 2 goal lead thrown away with 4 minutes to play and 2 heavy defeats but the first team remain unbeaten and you can't say we don't provide entertainment!
